• Center for Sustainability at Penn State - Online guide to Green PA Businesses and Industries. Choose a category at the site to find the product or service you desire from a PA business. If you find a product which you feel other LAN participants would find helpful please contact  LAN so we may add info to our Products page. The PSU website is evolving but currently useful. Yes, LAN is listed on the site under Sustainability Organizations, Sustainability Educational Materials, and  Other-Eco-Events/Education & Training.
• Clothes Drying Rack - Look for sturdy drying racks with ample areas to hang clothes of all sizes. Wooden dowels may work in dry homes but in moist homes these dowels may get moldy. The Martha Stewart Everyday drying rack has 27 feet of storage and is made of metal, plastic and vinyl. Dimensions are 29 5/8" wide, 14 3/8" deep, 42 1/4" high. Cost is about $27.  A LAN participant states, "We've had 2 for a few years and find them sturdy.  I'm sure wooden drying racks are more environmentally friendly, but they just mildew in our house since we keep the temperature low in winter.  So the Martha Stewart ones have been great for us".
• LED Crank Flashlight -  3 LED lights, compass Maxxima EGF-7221; Cole's Hardware.
• Compact Fluorescent Lights, or CFLs - long life bulbs that use typically 30% of the energy incandescents do to produce the same amount of light, local stores have a limited selection, also available online through  http://www.buylighting.com  and many other places, though not all with such a wide variety, anywhere from $6-20 depending on type and specifications, can cut your electricity bill by hundreds of dollars each year. For in-depth information read our CFL page.
• Paper - 100% recycled/100% post-consumer waste copy paper, acid free, processed chlorine free, 8.5 x 11 inches; Staples; sold by pkg. and ream. Action: print paper on both sides, save paper to use as scrap paper for notes, grocery lists, etc. Read about paper production at Green Guide #119.
• Toys -

TRUCE Toy Action Guide by Teachers Resisting Unhealthy Children's Entertainment. Excellent resource for choosing toys which enable children to use their own imaginations, creativity, and problem solving skills. Helpful for home, teachers, and community at large.

• Local, handcrafted soaps - 

Briar Patch Organic Farms- table inside center of Farmers' Market on Fairground Rd.,  Lewisburg every Wednesday and online; goat's milk products, herbal products, and more.

Sweet Sally's Soaps - available at Friday Growers' Market, June - October, Hufnagle Park, beside police station, Lewisburg; or directly from the maker, Sarah Wagner-Ranes, 570.523.9571.

• Toilet paper 

Marcal 100% recycled content, 60% minimum post-consumer content, no chlorine bleaching. Look for 12 roll pack with 352 2-ply sheets. Staples. Link shows product with only 300 sheets/roll but in store the larger roll is available. Be sure to read post-consumer content on pkg. as the higher the percentage the lower the amount of raw materials used in production and the greater the market for recycled products. The sheets at link are slightly thinner than rhe sheets on roll purchased in store. Roll in store is embossed with heart shapes.

CVS 100% recycled content, 60% minimum post-consumer content, no chlorine bleaching. 1000 sheets 1-ply. CVS.

Kitchen

• Metal coffee basket - available at supermarkets.
• Metal drain strainer - available at supermarkets, also available in smaller size. To decrease energy and trash, empty contents into compost bin rather than down disposal or in trash.
• 100% Recycled Plastic Trash Bags, GoodSense Earth Sense, 20 bags; Weis Markets. Biodegradable 13 gallon tall kitchen bags and lawn/leave bags are available at Wegman's in the Natural Foods section. The kitchen bags cost over 50 cents each.

Outdoors

• Vegetarian bird suet -

Vegetable shortening, flour, salt; made by Rolf Helbig in Mifflinburg, 570.966.3463.  Natural Food & Garden Store. 

To make your own bird "suet" Sialis has several "suet" recipes, many using vegetable shortening, others with lard. When using vegetable shortening use those with 0 trans fats, like Crisco containers marked as such. Sialis comes from the Latin word for bluebird and refers here to a web site which is a resource for helping bluebirds and other native cavity nesters. Be sure to scroll up/down the site. The "suet" recipe page also helps clarify differences between suet, lard, and vegetable shortening. You may use microwave to melt lard or vegetable shortening with peanut butter. Ingredients melt quickly so be alert using stovetop or micro.
