Compact Fluorescent Lights CFL's
Voices of Central Pennsylvania reports in their September issue (scroll down to second article in link) that two companies in State College are now accepting CFL bulbs for recycling and mercury abatement. Since the bulbs have such a long life span, you may not need the service for some time, but it's good to have the option. An earlier issue of Voices also called into question the benefits of CFLs, given the presence of mercury. But typically, if your electricity comes from coal, burning incandescents releases more mercury into the atmosphere through the plant smokestacks than cfls contain, for the same amount of light over time. That doesn't mean it's not dangerous, but helps put it into perspective. Newer bulbs also contain as little mercury as possible (watch out for cut-rate bulbs which may still contain the greater amounts).
