Car Greentips from Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS)

UCS links to Vehicle Maintenance, Efficient DrivingCleaner Car Technology,  Here are some examples:

  • Drive less. Walk or bicycle. Carpool. Combine errands. Choose a place to live that reduces your need to drive.
  • Avoid idling. Turn your engine off if you must wait in your car for more than a minute. Idling your engine for more than a minute burns more fuel than turning off and restarting your engine. In cold weather, let the car run for 30 seconds then drive slowly until the engine warms.
  • Avoid extra weight. Every extra 100 lbs. may reduce fuel efficiency by one to two percent.
  • Drive moderately. High speed driving and jack-rabbit starts increase fuel use and emissions. Generally, speeds over 60 mpg decrease fuel efficiency.
  • If you are looking for a new car, consider a hybrid. Hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles switch off the engine and use battery power for accessories when the car is not moving, effectively eliminating idling. Read UCS Hybrid Center website for more information on these fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicles, or our own FAQ below.  State and federal  hybrid electric rebates until funds run out. Winter tires are available for Toyota Prius. See Winter Tires section below.
