CSAs - Community Supported Agriculture
Members prepay farmers (in spring for fresh produce provided late spring into fall) to provide a living year round wage for our small, regional farmers and fresh produce on members' tables.
Points to consider prior to purchasing a share
- Visit the farm to get an idea how the farm is managed.
- What crops does the farmer intend to grow? When are these crops generally available?
- When and where will you pick up your share, i.e. time frame, day of the wk?
- Be prepared for some weeks of few crops secondary to weather conditions, other weeks you may receive an abundance of crops.
- Produce is preselected for you and placed in a box for your pick-up. This means sometimes you may receive very large sized produce or very small or just the size you desire.
- Consider your flexibility in preparing food.
- Share your recipes. Ask for recipe guidance from the farmer as well as read LAN recipes. Sometimes your box may include recipes.
- Possibility of splitting a share with another person/family. If you decide to split a share, how will you arrange splitting produce when odd numbers in box and who will pick up produce which weeks? When it is not your turn to pick up produce, will you go to other person's house to get the produce and box or will that person deliver produce to you? Shaffer Family Farm presorts half shares.
- Possibility of working on farm in exchange for a lower cost or free share.
- Along with the advantage of eating fresh food from local farms, members may learn to eat a broader selection of foods and interact with a variety of people.
