Antibiotic use in livestock

  • Read the problems of buying antibiotic fed livestock in PennFuture's article, Squandering Miracles, 7 March 2007.  The  American livestock industry uses 70% of all antibiotics manufactured. The European Union and Australia have bans on feeding antibiotics to healthy livestock but not here. Factory farms oppose measures by the American Medical Association and World Health Organization to ban the use of antibiotics in healthy animals. Using low doses of antibiotics in healthy animals increases the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food, air, and soil.
